FIRST FLOOR The house was expanded rearward to create a back porch and a more attractive facade. Inside, the old powder room became a full bath.
SECOND FLOOR One small bedroom and part of the new addition became the master suite, which contains its own comfortable sitting area.
Before the renovation, the kitchen was cramped and dated. Reworking the space was crucial, as the owners spend a lot of time there.
The Wish List
• Create a two-story rear extension that would include a back porch, family room, breakfast room, expanded
kitchen, and master bedroom
• Improve the exterior by applying stucco and siding plus new asphalt-tile roofing
• Add new landscaping and a tiny backyard fish pond
• Repair interior wood trim and add grandeur with Arts and Crafts-style columns
• Install new hardwood flooring throughout the house
• Uncover the front porch and dining room fireplace, both of which had been hidden for more than twenty years
• Expand the first-floor bedroom and turn the powder room into a full bath
Mollie, the family pet, knows her place in the reordered kitchen. Granite counters sweep the length of the wall where the range is placed, then angle off into a two-tiered L. The raised portion adds bonus storage on both sides and also shields the cook and mess from anyone who happens to be sitting in the adjacent breakfast room.
