Remodeling House Ideas : Classic Revival Remodeling House Ideas 04
BEFORE: Originally a choppy, congested space, the old ground level of the farmhouse was ill suited to modern living. AFTER: Removing the wall between kitchen and dining room increased both space and light. The floor plan was further streamlined by relocating and reconfiguring the staircase.
BEFORE: The existing second floor lacked a critical modern convenience: there was no bathroom to service the two bedrooms. AFTER: Upstairs, the effects of shifting the staircase—which now includes a landing—were dramatic, providing more than enough space for the desired master bath.
The Wish List
• Repair and preserve the front facade so it would still blend in with its traditional surroundings
• Add windows and skylights to fill the house with sunlight
• Create the illusion of greater interior space with an open floor plan and vaulted ceilings
• Knock down walls to eliminate small, boxy rooms and increase air circulation
• Relocate the staircase for a whole-house open floor plan and to make adding a second-floor bath possible
• Reconfigure rooms to fit the family’s lifestyle
• Increase the house’s overall storage capacity
